CUISINE: American (New)
NEIGHBORHOOD: Williamsburg

110 Bedford St. between 11th and 12th

The Bedford, located in the old Sound Fix HQ, is throwing its hat in the ring to contend with Williamsburg’s ‘new American’ heavy hitters, such as Marlow & Sons and Rye. Guess what? Their ingredients are local, their would-be patrons are stylish in that nostalgia-for-another-era fashion, and their interior is oaky and candlelit. What’s wrong with hopping on a bandwagon if said bandwagon is proving to be a hot ticket? You shouldn’t need one more reason to leave Manhattan for better shores, says this Brooklyn loyalist. CONT'D

I thought I'd mark my YAH revival (it's been 34 days since my last confession) with something saucy. There's an endless supply of fantastic BBQ in this city – from Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem to Bar Q in the West Village— but none has received as much acclaim as Williamsburg's Fette Sau. CONT'D

Williamsburg pizza fave crosses the river, parks around the corner from East Village gem, Luzzo's, and easily takes the win. Start off with the fire roasted mortadella — strip of intensely flavored pork sausage, halved cherry tomatoes, raw onions and fresh basil — presented like a salad. It's unbelievable, and it's just the beginning. Cooked in a wood-fired oven, Motorino's personal pizzas are the best I've had in the city. The dough is soft and moist with black circles of burnt, ashy crust. Unlike Luzzo's, whose pies are sometimes rolled too thin and fall apart, the crust at Motorino manages to be both delicate and sturdy, easily surviving the distance between plate and mouth. CONT'D

CUISINE: American (New), Bistro
NEIGHBORHOOD: Williamsburg

247 S. 1st St. Between Roebling and Havermeyer Sts.

Hidden on First St. in Williamsburg, I never would have found Rye if not for Frankie's bright yellow vespa, conveniently parked in front of the restaurant's sneaky wooden doors. Bingo!
While waiting for our table, we sipped on old fashions, fancied up with gigantic square ice cubes, and discussed how everyone in the restaurant was way above average looking. (Singles, take note.)
I was really into the atmosphere: the lighting was low, the wooden floors were creaky, and our antique salt and pepper shakers arrived on charming silver platters. Our waiter, who didn't seem to know much about the menu, was at least well-styled, rocking a sweet vest and black skinny tie. CONT'D

It's cheaper to eat dinner at Peter's than to buy the same food and cook it yourself at home. And, depending on your cooking prowess, it might be a whole lot tastier. The focus is rotisserie chicken, in addition to a rotating list of other meaty options (spare ribs, meat loaf, beef stew), to be paired with a variety of homey sides: grilled and mashed sweet potatoes, spinach, green beans, okra, yellow rice, cabbage. Order at the counter, where delightfully scruffy, flannel-clad staff dish out generous portions of veggies and starch from a dozen red Le Creuset pots. CONT'D

About Us
We are young (early 20's) and hungry (for knowledge! music! art! food!) friends living on (or in areas which border) Manhattan. We moved to the city seeking higher education, and an alternative to frat parties and gin buckets. We prefer a bottle of Chianti to a keg, lunches at City Bakery to a dining hall, Joe's to Starbucks, Frankie's Amatriciana to Batali's. Our uniting factor is our love for food. For detailed, personal information, keep reading.
