Peter's Since 1969

REVIEW

CUISINE: American (Traditional)
NEIGHBORHOOD: Williamsburg

168 Bedford Ave Btwn 7th and 8th St

(p) 718-388-2811

It's cheaper to eat dinner at Peter's than to buy the same food and cook it yourself at home. And, depending on your cooking prowess, it might be a whole lot tastier. The focus is rotisserie chicken, in addition to a rotating list of other meaty options (spare ribs, meat loaf, beef stew), to be paired with a variety of homey sides: grilled and mashed sweet potatoes, spinach, green beans, okra, yellow rice, cabbage. Order at the counter, where delightfully scruffy, flannel-clad staff dish out generous portions of veggies and starch from a dozen red Le Creuset pots. CONT'D

Gimme! Coffee

REVIEW

July 27, 2009

CUISINE: Coffeehouse
NEIGHBORHOOD: Nolita, Williamsburg

228 Mott St Btwn Prince and Spring St

(p) 212-226-4011

495 Lorimer St Btwn Powers and Grand St

(P) 718-388-7771

Without tables or chairs, there is no sitting or loitering. Gimme! Coffee is about one thing: coffee. And not just any coffee. The folks at Gimme are determined to brew beans that "turn people on." According to Gimme, "not all beans are created equal" and this small shop is dedicated to finding only the best:  fairly traded, organic beans from small family farms in Colombia and Mexico. The beans are then roasted in small batches by real people, not machines. Of course, the final touch comes from the baristas who undergo serious espresso education before manning the bar, resulting in finished products which are often presented with artistic flourishes. Caracas Arepa Bar

REVIEW

March 19, 2009

CUISINE: Chicken, Sandwiches, Venezuelan
NEIGHBORHOOD: East Village, Williamsburg

93 1/2 E 7th street between 1st Ave and Ave A

(p)212- 529-2314

91 E 7th St Between 1st Ave and Ave A (To-Go Location)

(p) 212-228-5062

291 Grand St between Roebling and Havemeyer

(p)718-218-6787

Arepas are griddle fried corn cakes and a Venezuelan staple that have, thankfully, invaded the East Village and Williamsburg too!  Usually the line outside Caracas means at least an hour wait because, while inexpensive, the arepa making process is not fast food.  Each arepa comes out freshly fried and delicious-- no heat lamps involved. Golden and crispy on the outside, soft and creamy within, the arepas almost don’t need a filling, but Caracas offers plenty of options...
