Boqueria

CUISINE: Spanish, Tapas, Venezuelan
NEIGHBORHOOD: Soho

Soho’s Boqueria has all of the components necessary for an enjoyable and authentic tapas experience: a robust wine list, an offering of traditional dishes and seasonally-crafted specials, bars or booths depending on your preference, and an open kitchen. Our server knew intimate details of each and every dish we ordered, reflecting upon the contrast of flavors, and which dishes would pair nicely. He recommended a bottle of wine that perfectly suited our requests and tastes, and ultimately the food was flawlessly prepared and equally delicious. CONT'D

Bacaro

REVIEW

September 14, 2009

CUISINE: Italian, Tapas
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chinatown, Lower East Side

136 Division St Btwn Orchard and Ludlow

(p) 212-941-5060

Bacaro is well worth the trek to Chinatown. The restaurant is deceivingly large. The street level space includes only a handful of tables, while below, an expansive floor-plan filled with many curious rooms awaits. The dungeon-like space is wonderfully decorated to resemble a Venetian workman's pub, complete with wooden planks, exposed brick, and unexpected passageways; three private dining spaces are hidden around stone corners. In the main space is a crowded bar, serving a wide selection of wines as well as $10 cocktails. The candlelit atmosphere is well-suited for many occasions: a romantic date stop if you score a single table, a group destination in one of the private dining rooms, and a great place to meet new people at one of the communal tables...

MoMA's Cafe 2

March 20, 2009

CUISINE: American (New), Coffeehouse, Italian, Sandwiches, Tapas
NEIGHBORHOOD: Midtown

11 W 53rd Street, on the 2nd floor of the Museum of Modern Art

(P) 212-708-9400

Just because Cafe 2 is the most reasonably priced of MoMA's restaurants, does not mean it's mediocre by any means.  Run by Danny Meyer's hospitality group, the cafe is a cross between an old italian meat shop, with cured meats and cheeses decorating the back wall, and a super-chic version of your elementary school cafeteria...

Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto

REVIEW

March 19, 2009

CUISINE: Italian, Tapas
NEIGHBORHOOD: Upper West Side

283 Amsterdam Ave Between 73rd and 74th

(p) 212-877-4800

Many people consider Soho to be the most beautiful zone in Manhattan.  Still, it’s nice to leave every once and a while and experience something new.  I know that no one goes uptown to eat, but I do, and Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto is the perfect example of why you should, too.

“I’ve died and gone to heaven,” said my mother, as we dug into our fifth plate at Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto. When I enter an Italian restaurant I want to try every single thing on the menu.  My dream has come to fruition at Rosi Parmacotto, for while their menu isn’t small, their portions are, and every plate is under $10.  This means I get to sample nearly everything, especially when Mama Celenza is paying for it...

MERCAT

REVIEW

March 3, 2009

CUISINE: Spanish, Tapas, Wine Bar
NEIGHBORHOOD: East Village, Greenwich Village, Noho

45 Bond St between Lafayette and Bowery

(p) 212-529-8600

(Patates Braves)

Monday morning I awoke, like the rest of Manhattan, to find a blizzard outside my window. The wind was howling, snow was accumulating, and the temperature was 16 degrees but felt like 2. At dinner time, the streets of NYC were empty, and so was Mercat. Upon entering I felt an immediate warmth, despite the high ceilings and almost overwhelming size of the space. The decor is sleek and clean, yet still homey thanks to exposed brick walls, low lighting, and dark wooden tables. While waiting for my friend, I ordered a glass of red wine, which was generous in both size and price ($13)...
