Pearl Oyster Bar

REVIEW

CUISINE: Seafood
NEIGHBORHOOD: West Village

18 Cornelia St Between Bleecker & W 4th St

(P) 212-691-8211

Pearl Oyster Bar may be the perfect place to toast the waning days of summer. The restaurant understands that simple is best, for their appetizing fare is served in one of the least pretentious atmospheres I’ve encountered in an upscale restaurant; the vibe is laid back, the waiters are in T-shirts, and it feels like a vacation, but without the sunburn and tourists...

Mermaid Inn

REVIEW

July 17, 2009

CUISINE: American (Traditional), Seafood
NEIGHBORHOOD: East Village

96 Second Ave between 5th and 6th Streets

(p) 212-674-5870

Only having seen the Mermaid Inn from the sidewalk, it was a delightful surprise to discover that the restaurant is comprised of four different sections, each with their own ambiance.  The front room is your typical New York restaurant, complete with a bar and floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the outdoor sidewalk seating.  For those that want to avoid the bustle of Second Avenue, just walk past the kitchen.  You'll be transported to a restaurant reminiscent of northeastern beach towns, including a complementary outdoor garden.

The Frying Pan

REVIEW

June 1, 2009

CUISINE: American (Traditional), Seafood
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea

Pier 66 at West 26th Street at West Side Highway

(p) 212- 989- 6363

When the weather is agreeable there is no better place to be than the Frying Pan, a boat resurrected from the bottom of the Chesapeake bay, relocated to Chelsea Piers, and transformed into a raucous bar/restaurant. Don't be dismayed by the paper plates and plastic cups because the food--burgers, salads and seafood-- is actually pretty good. Cheeseburgers are served with thick slices of juicy tomatoes and raw onions on fresh brioche rolls; jerk chicken sandwiches come with a tangy mango salsa. Pair either with the irresistible garlic fries...
