I've always looked to street cart food and those who eat it with an eye of disapproval. All I see is a sweaty dude chopping chunks of beef, choking it with sauce, and filling the streets with a distinct, street food smell. But then I had lunch from Calexico and set my prejudice aside for good. My burrito was by far the best Mexican food I've had in the city-- and it's not fast food either. The meat is grilled to order, which takes about ten to fifteen minutes per job. The famed Calexico carna asada (grilled marinated skirt steak), can be made in burrito or taco form and is simply delicious.

Cupcake Stop: Mobile Cupcakes Have Arrived! Sneak Preview Tonight
May 22, 2009
NEIGHBORHOOD: Mobile

Photo from Serious Eats
We think the recession is guiding some Americans in the right direction. Example: Lev Ekster, a graduate from New York Law who couldn't find a job as a lawyer, and instead went into the mobile cupcake business. Because really, how much longer could New York City have survived without cupcakes on wheels?
What you need to know:
-The cupcakes are baked fresh daily with high-quality ingredients.
-Traditional flavors are sold in addition to special ones like mint chocolate chip, strawberry shortcake, and peanut butter and old fashioned banana pudding.
-Leftovers are donated to homeless shelters and charities.
-Cupcake Stop will be using Twitter to communicate the truck's daily locations, but plans to be around Herald Square from 9am-5pm, and Union Square or the West Village from 6pm-12am.

A truly belgian treat, the croissant-like texture of Thomas DeGeest's wafels will put your mama's waffles to shame. Sure, American waffles are great-- crispy on the outside, spongy on the inside, and in some cases, even microwaveable! But there is a reason that we douse our waffles in syrup and butter. With one bite of a "wafel," you will understand why Europeans often look down on American food culture. These wafels need no help-- they are rich and flavorful all on their own.

In New York City, you know a good product when it's being sold from a truck. Vendors like The Mudd Truck, Dessert Truck, Mr. Softee, and Van Leeuwuen can't be restricted to one location. They have to spread the joy, like Santa.
Ben Van Leeuwen is the real deal; he didn't conjure up a phony name to make his ice cream sound gourmet (ie. Haagan Dazs). No siree, Van Leeuwen sounds fancy (or at least very German) all on its own. According to their mission statement, Van Leeuwen "set out to make the best ice cream possible." The Young and Hungry is a fan of these kind of superlative goals. (We set out to be the best food blog ever.) To accomplish said goal, Van Leeuwen created a custard base that is simply derived from three primary sources: cow, cane sugar, and chickens...

About Us
We are young (early 20's) and hungry (for knowledge! music! art! food!) friends living on (or in areas which border) Manhattan. We moved to the city seeking higher education, and an alternative to frat parties and gin buckets. We prefer a bottle of Chianti to a keg, lunches at City Bakery to a dining hall, Joe's to Starbucks, Frankie's Amatriciana to Batali's. Our uniting factor is our love for food. For detailed, personal information, keep reading.
