New York Burger Co.

REVIEW

CUISINE: American (New), Burgers
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea, Flatiron/Union Square, Midtown

A few months back I wrote a less than glowing review of BRGR.  That disastrous meal was enough to make me give up burgers at lunch time for the next few months.  Enough time has passed, however,  that I'm willing to give ground-meat another go.  After hearing good things from a reliable food consort, I decided to try New York Burger Co.  There are two NY Burger locations in Manhattan, and you can rest assured that the quality of meat and bun at this chain far surpasses that of BRGR.  CONT'D

Le Relais De Venise

REVIEW

May 10, 2010

CUISINE: French
NEIGHBORHOOD: Midtown

590 Lexington Avenue E. 52nd and E. 53rd St

(p) 212-758-3989

Waitstaff breeze around the tables at this nostalgic Venetian looking-bistro marking paper tablecloths with "medium well" and "rare" — that's one of the few choices you have at Relais, the American brother to its international twins in Paris, London and Barcelona. The $24 prix fixe includes a salad and a stellar steak au poivre with slender cut frites. You'll be grateful for the Bernaise style sauce so you can mop up the second helpings of steak frites from speedy servers, who still manage to be genteel while they expedite everyone along their courses. CUISINE: Burgers
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea, Midtown

Brgr on Urbanspoon

287 7th Avenue between 26th and 27th Sts.

(p) 212-488-7500

Around the corner from where I work (and a ten minute walk from Shake Shack) is brgr. While I would normally prefer a superior burger in exchange for a slight commute, I don't have much time to spare for lunch — they're working me hard at Morpheus— and the non-stop raining puts a literal damper on things.  Immediacy is key.

Let me preface this review by saying that I'm not usually a burger-for-lunch person; I don't like to feel weighed down midday. But one day last week, feeling a little hungover and unusually hungry, I was craving a sloppy, delicious, burger.  So I decided to try brgr (pronounced burger). CONT'D

Lunching and Shopping at Grand Central Market

REVIEW

March 11, 2010

CUISINE: American (New), Desserts & Bakeries, Italian
NEIGHBORHOOD: Midtown

A couple of weeks ago YAH was invited to go sampling in the Grand Central Market. Having grown up in Bedford, NY, Frankie's the only one in the gang who's familiar with Grand Central. Madeline and Rachel are from California, and when Seth and I want to visit the family in Philadelphia, we're stuck with Penn Station, the food options of which are limited to Famous Amos cookies at the news stand, or a full blown wings-and-fries dinner at TGI Fridays.  I knew that Grand Central had some decent grub, but I didn't realize the extent of their culinary prowess. Forget getting a train; let's get some lunch.

Below: A rundown of the day's edibles, plus a video of YAH talking to Murray's Cheese, interviewing Mr. Zaro of Zaro's Bread, and sampling $100 per lb. proscuitto.

Anthos: Restaurant Week Robbery!

REVIEW

It's not often that I go to fancy, white tablecloth kind of places, and I almost never go to ones in Midtown.  However, I wanted to use Restaurant Week as an excuse to try something out of the ordinary in terms of both budget and location. When Rachel suggest we go to Anthos, Michael Psilakis' Midtown Greek restaurant, I was all for it.  Bruni gave the restaurant two stars ("very good") in 2007, as did New York Magazine's Adam Platt.  With entrees normally priced in the mid-thirty range, the Restaurant Week package —three course pre-fix for $35 — seemed like a steal. Right? CONT'D
