Anthos: Restaurant Week Robbery!

It's not often that I go to fancy, white tablecloth kind of places, and I almost never go to ones in Midtown.  However, I wanted to use Restaurant Week as an excuse to try something out of the ordinary in terms of both budget and location. When Rachel suggest we go to Anthos, Michael Psilakis' Midtown Greek restaurant, I was all for it.  Bruni gave the restaurant two stars ("very good") in 2007, as did New York Magazine's Adam Platt.  With entrees normally priced in the mid-thirty range, the Restaurant Week package —three course pre-fix for $35 — seemed like a steal. Right? CONT'D

Five Guys

REVIEW

September 29, 2009

CUISINE: Burgers
NEIGHBORHOOD: Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Midtown, Park Slope, West Village

138 Montague St at Henry St

(p) 718-797-9380

296 Bleecker St and Barrow St

(p) 212-367-9200

If Michael Pollan condoned fast food, Five Guy just might pass the test. The chain, which started in Virginia, is often compared to the West Coast favorite, In N Out, and for good reason. They both deliver soft burgers and salty fries in a paper bag, but with a healthier mission statement. There's no trans-fat and no frozen meat; they use only peanut oil and their fries are from Idaho potatos. It's high-brow fast food, and it works. CONT'D.

Convivio

REVIEW

August 4, 2009

CUISINE: Italian
NEIGHBORHOOD: Midtown

Saffron Gnocchetti

45 Tudor City Pl Between 1st and 2nd Ave

(p) 212-599-5045

Go to Convivio hungry. This Tudor City manor of a restaurant counts some surprising dishes among its four-course $59 prix fixe dinner menu. Under the soft light in Michael White's expansive space, some diners take their time savoring slight pasta portions while others dive like wolfhounds into hearty entrees that come closer to something shoved at your grandma's urging than what one might expect of this upscale destination...

MoMA's Cafe 2

March 20, 2009

CUISINE: American (New), Coffeehouse, Italian, Sandwiches, Tapas
NEIGHBORHOOD: Midtown

11 W 53rd Street, on the 2nd floor of the Museum of Modern Art

(P) 212-708-9400

Just because Cafe 2 is the most reasonably priced of MoMA's restaurants, does not mean it's mediocre by any means.  Run by Danny Meyer's hospitality group, the cafe is a cross between an old italian meat shop, with cured meats and cheeses decorating the back wall, and a super-chic version of your elementary school cafeteria...
