I am about to spill a treasured secret of my food-loving soul.  After this review, there is no going back: I am going to reveal something B-I-G.  Ready?  Let’s get intimate.

I like health food.  Like, I really, really, really like health food.  I voluntarily eat things like tempeh and I use stevia extract in my coffee instead of sugar and I just have this thing for whole grains.  Kale is my BFF

Given this confession, can we still be friends?*

AN OPEN LETTER TO SPRING NATURAL

REVIEW

April 8, 2010

CUISINE: American (Traditional), Health Food
NEIGHBORHOOD: Nolita, Soho

WTF is that?

Dear Spring Natural,

Oh, how I wish you were good.  I would really like to rate you as "worth it." I so need a healthy restaurant in my life.  I was attracted to you for so many reasons: You are big enough that you rarely have a wait, and the atmosphere reminds me of my childhood. (California upbringing, vegetarian mother, etc. etc.)  You are affordable, and close to my apartment. Thus, you've given me nearly every reason to turn to you as my go-to joint.  BUT NO.  You nearly had it in the bag, buddy, but my fantasies of a beautiful relationship have been destroyed. You've ruined everything because your food is bad. CONT'D

City Bakery

REVIEW

March 1, 2009

CUISINE: Coffeehouse, Desserts & Bakeries, Health Food, Salads, Sandwiches
NEIGHBORHOOD: Flatiron/Union Square

3 W 18th St between 5th and 6th avenue

(p) 212-366-1414

Oh, if only my high school dining hall was like City Bakery, where a variety of alluring options displayed buffet-style aim to satisfy various pallets. Healthy lunchers will delight in fresh spinach and arugula salads, marinated vegetables like string beans and swiss chard, in addition to glazed tofu and roasted peppers. Those craving something savory and substantial will relish in homemade baked macaroni and cheese, slices of fried parmesan encrusted chicken, and proscuitto and gorgonzolo pizzettes. Of course, patrons craving sweets will be overwhelmed with City Bakery's famous assortment of cookies and cakes. On a cold day, City Bakery's hot chocolate is a great substitute for cookies or coffee; it is thick and intense, reminiscent of the Willy Wonka chocolate river. Yum.

MOONCAKE FOODS

REVIEW

February 20, 2009

CUISINE: Asian, Health Food, Sandwiches, Soups
NEIGHBORHOOD: Soho

28 Watts St at 6th Ave

(p) 212- 219- 8888

Mooncake Foods may very well serve the least expensive food in all of Soho.  You can choose from a variety of snacks, salads, sandwiches, and platters all for under ten dollars.  Wonton soups like the Snow Pea Greens and Roasted Garlic arrive in oversized bowls.  Steaming hot and full of flavor, they are the perfect cure for a mild cold.  Miso glazed salmon is the most generous portion of fish I've seen at a restaurant, if a bit overcooked. The whitefish tacos with hoisin sauce are just as a tasty as meat ones, and won't make you feel terrible afterwards.  The options are plentiful, and the quality of food is high, making Mooncake Foods the ideal spot for the budgeted, health inclined.

WHOLE FOODS MARKET- BOWERY

REVIEW

February 19, 2009

CUISINE: Asian, Health Food, Salads, Sandwiches, Sushi
NEIGHBORHOOD: East Village, Lower East Side

95 E Houston between Bowery and Chrystie

(p) 212- 420- 1320

Whole Foods is a wonderful world. Saturdays mean free samples of Cheddar Cheese, Ciao Bella gelato, and the new natural soda of the day.  Cold salad bars boast fresh veggies, chicken, tuna, and tofu salads, cheeses and apples, among many others.  Paralleling the cold food bar are the hot ones with chicken Tikki Masala, mashed potatoes, baked veggies, and a variety of rice.  Mix and match; there is something here for every taste bud.
