Hill Country

REVIEW

CUISINE: Barbeque
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea

30 West 26th Street Between Broadway and 6th Ave.
(p) 212-255-4544

I recently started working in Chelsea, so you should expect an influx of restaurant reviews in the new hood. The first addition is Hill Country, a surprisingly awesome BBQ joint on 26th street. I've only been once, but I can tell this place will make it into my weekly rotation. It's cheap, easy, and delicious.CONT'D

Bill's Bar and Burger: Better than the Shack?

REVIEW

February 11, 2010

CUISINE: American (Traditional), Burgers
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea, Meatpacking District, West Village

22 9th Ave. at 11th St.

(p) 212-414-3003

In a neighborhood filled with designer showrooms and fancy hotels, the popularity of Bill's Burger proves that everyone likes to dumb it down once in a while. The front room revolves around a generic bar; the back is filled with blue and white checkered-tablecloths and exposed brick. Heinz ketchup as well as both Gulden's and French's mustards adorn the tables. CONT'D

Five Guys

REVIEW

September 29, 2009

CUISINE: Burgers
NEIGHBORHOOD: Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Midtown, Park Slope, West Village

138 Montague St at Henry St

(p) 718-797-9380

296 Bleecker St and Barrow St

(p) 212-367-9200

If Michael Pollan condoned fast food, Five Guy just might pass the test. The chain, which started in Virginia, is often compared to the West Coast favorite, In N Out, and for good reason. They both deliver soft burgers and salty fries in a paper bag, but with a healthier mission statement. There's no trans-fat and no frozen meat; they use only peanut oil and their fries are from Idaho potatos. It's high-brow fast food, and it works. CONT'D.

Eleni's New York

REVIEW

September 8, 2009

CUISINE: Cupcakes, Desserts & Bakeries
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea, Upper East Side

75 9th Avenue at 15th Street /1270 Madison Ave Between 90 & 91st St

(p) 1-888-435-3647

Ever dream of eating Robert Pattinson's head? Look no further than Eleni's New York bakery.

Eleni's cookies are nice to look at. They're packaged well— chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, ginger snappy, and choco-toffee arrive in their own cylindrical containers within a geometric cardboard box. Other treats, like the seasonal gingerbread cookies are sugary works of art. Orange, red and yellow sprinkles cling to leaf shapes in the "Fall Foliage" gift box.

But the themed cookies don't end there. Easter, Halloween, and Thanksgiving cookies are easily overshadowed by the more unique sets of Fashion cookies (Lacoste t-shirt cookies) and Oscar Season cookies (cartoon versions of Micky Rourke and Brad Pitt heads). It's also possible to design your own cookies for business, weddings, and party favors.

The Frying Pan

REVIEW

June 1, 2009

CUISINE: American (Traditional), Seafood
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea

Pier 66 at West 26th Street at West Side Highway

(p) 212- 989- 6363

When the weather is agreeable there is no better place to be than the Frying Pan, a boat resurrected from the bottom of the Chesapeake bay, relocated to Chelsea Piers, and transformed into a raucous bar/restaurant. Don't be dismayed by the paper plates and plastic cups because the food--burgers, salads and seafood-- is actually pretty good. Cheeseburgers are served with thick slices of juicy tomatoes and raw onions on fresh brioche rolls; jerk chicken sandwiches come with a tangy mango salsa. Pair either with the irresistible garlic fries...
