The Meatball Shop

A menu honoring the meatball where nothing exceeds $9? Yes and yes. It took us a while to brave the lines at Meatball Shop; the average wait is two hours and an inside source confirmed that two hours is actually the maximum time sentence the hosts are allowed to assign, meaning its often longer than that. Wowza. CONT'D

The Clover Club

REVIEW

Clover Club is underselling itself. You may think it's just another Brooklyn haven for the whiskey and gin obsessed, manned by mixologists wearing tuxedo vests or suspenders, but it's so much more.   Neighborhood fans admire the seriously killer cocktails, like the Improved Whiskey Cocktail (rye whiskey, maraschino, absinthe, bitters) and the Little Bird (gin, muddled kiwi, aperol, lime, and bordeaux blank). What really impressed me, on my second visit, was the grub.  The menu is compact — a short list of "Savory Bites" — but each dish was packed with flavor and personality.(CON'T)

AN OPEN LETTER TO SPRING NATURAL

REVIEW

April 8, 2010

CUISINE: American (Traditional), Health Food
NEIGHBORHOOD: Nolita, Soho

WTF is that?

Dear Spring Natural,

Oh, how I wish you were good.  I would really like to rate you as "worth it." I so need a healthy restaurant in my life.  I was attracted to you for so many reasons: You are big enough that you rarely have a wait, and the atmosphere reminds me of my childhood. (California upbringing, vegetarian mother, etc. etc.)  You are affordable, and close to my apartment. Thus, you've given me nearly every reason to turn to you as my go-to joint.  BUT NO.  You nearly had it in the bag, buddy, but my fantasies of a beautiful relationship have been destroyed. You've ruined everything because your food is bad. CONT'D

Bill's Bar and Burger: Better than the Shack?

REVIEW

February 11, 2010

CUISINE: American (Traditional), Burgers
NEIGHBORHOOD: Chelsea, Meatpacking District, West Village

22 9th Ave. at 11th St.

(p) 212-414-3003

In a neighborhood filled with designer showrooms and fancy hotels, the popularity of Bill's Burger proves that everyone likes to dumb it down once in a while. The front room revolves around a generic bar; the back is filled with blue and white checkered-tablecloths and exposed brick. Heinz ketchup as well as both Gulden's and French's mustards adorn the tables. CONT'D

The Harrison

REVIEW

November 10, 2009

CUISINE: American (Traditional)
NEIGHBORHOOD: Tribeca

photo: Eater.com

355 Greenwich at Harrison St.

(p) 212-274-9310

The Harrison is an okay place to take stubborn parents or grandparents if they like to spend some money for safe and conservative American plates. It is not, however, an ideal place to go for those with young and adventurous pallets.

The restaurant is pretty, but a little stiff. Faux-rustic light fixtures and handsome upholstered leather booths feel like a Restoration Hardware showroom.  Dad music —Elton John, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel — jives perfectly with the gray-haired tables.  The menu is everything Pop-Pop looks for on his Caribbean cruise. CONT'D
