122 St. Marks Pl. at Ave. A
(p) 212-477-4440
I rarely make it to alphabet city, so I haven’t really explored the neighborhood’s culinary offerings as much as Nolita, where I live. But on Monday, when I wasn’t working (happy b-day Washington!), I went to get some film developed on Avenue A, and found myself with time to kill.
One of the reasons I love New York is that you can easily discover a new place, stumble upon a hidden treasure that will end up becoming one of your go-to joints. I walked by Holyland Market on St. Marks Place once without noticing it, and it wasn’t until the second round that I peered through the window and saw the trays of bourekas. CONT'D

Sur La Table Sale Items and Splurges!
February 5, 2010

My weaknesses tend to aggregate in the realms of food and shopping, rendering certain situations that combine the two to be particularly dangerous: I've been known to spend far too long in ethnic food markets and even the Whole Foods mushroom section can stop me in my tracks. It is with great self restraint that I inform you about the Sur La Table once-yearly sale.
The sale, which discounts select merchandise 20-40% off, also gives me an opportunity to share the kitchen items I can't live without. Shopaholicism aside, the following are worth the splurge. CONT'D

Foodie Gift Guide 2009: Kitchen Gear, Gadgets, and Gurus
December 9, 2009
For the burgeoning home-cook, kitchen accessories are the best kinds of toys, and the holidays are a great excuse to restock your cabinets with fun (albeit slightly excessive) goodies! Below, a list of our recommendations.

Who doesn't love a good apron? Seth has one with a map of the London Tube, Madeline has some colorful, high-waisted getup, and Frankie has a complete chef's suit (inscribed with his initials no less). For those who spend time in the kitchen, it's nice to look the part. Anthropologie has a fantastic selection of colorful, printed, flowing frocks ranging from $19- $38. Channel your inner Betty Draper, ladies.

Jonathan Safron Foer: Eating Animals
October 28, 2009

A few months back, we interviewed author Jonathan Safron Foer about his dietary habits and dining in Park Slope. Turns out, Foer has a lot to say about eating. His newest work, Eating Animals— a non-fiction book about his decision not to eat meat — will be published November 2nd, but has already received a lot of attention. CONT'D

Why Is Cereal So Expensive?
August 14, 2009

Okay, so, I know that as a self-professed healthy eater I shouldn't be eating cereals like this. It's barely more acceptable than a bowl of Lucky Charms or Fruity Pebbles or Cocoa Krispies. It's probably made with more chemicals and preservative and trans fats than a multi-colored fruit roll up, but here's the thing: I love Honey Bunches of Oats. They are my one, true, unhealthy food vice and I won't give them up! I won't!
Problem is, I can't afford them.
Associated Supermarket sells HBOO for $5.49. Fresh Direct sells a small, 12.25 oz box for $4.79-- a box this size wouldn't last me a week. And Gristedes, the biggest, fattest bully of supermarket chains, sells it for a whopping $5.99. The best place to go is Duane Reade which sells all Post cereals, buy one get one free, or two for $5, biweekly. It's beautiful. Go now, and buy in bulk.
To conclude my post on Post, an image I am not proud of:

About Us
We are young (early 20's) and hungry (for knowledge! music! art! food!) friends living on (or in areas which border) Manhattan. We moved to the city seeking higher education, and an alternative to frat parties and gin buckets. We prefer a bottle of Chianti to a keg, lunches at City Bakery to a dining hall, Joe's to Starbucks, Frankie's Amatriciana to Batali's. Our uniting factor is our love for food. For detailed, personal information, keep reading.
