CUISINE: Delis, Desserts & Bakeries
NEIGHBORHOOD: Upper East Side

1292 Madison Ave (corner of 92nd)
p. 212.860.1707
As a child, there were certain places your parents take you for a treat. Maybe you won the spelling bee, maybe you placed second. Maybe you placed 5th out of seven competitors (who knew “beginning” had two n’s in the middle in fourth grade?!) Still, for Upper East Side middle-schoolers, the spot was definitely Yura on the bright corner of 92nd and Madison. Even though I am now an official “adult,” the spot is still a delight to visit and a joy to eat at. READ ON....
Officially a “specialty deli,” Yura offers a wide array of prepared foods, deli classics, and delicious treats that satisfy children, adults, and everyone in between. Perhaps my favorite childhood pleasure was the Angle Food Cupcake – a fluffy moist cake with an exploded crusty top, a choice of lemon or chocolate sauce drizzled over. If they were sold out (as is often the case since it’s one of the most popular desserts), the Devil Dogs — two chocolate cookie-cakes sandwiching homemade cream — was a sinister second.
Of course, treats aren’t always sweet. The turkey pinwheels are consistently fresh, light, and crisp – wrapped with arugula, tomato and light mayonnaise. The homemade chicken fingers with accompanying honey mustard sauce are crunchy, moist and expertly tangy.
If a more substantial lunch is what you crave, the sandwiches are equally as legendary as the fingers. The large turkey sandwich filled with Munster cheese and zesty mayo or the rare roast beef on onion loaf are perfect for a quick grab-n-go meal.
The prices may seem a dollar or two more than what you may be used to, but by uptown standards, $6.75 for a gourmet roast chicken and chive mayo sandwich seems pretty damn reasonable. On a sunny day, if you have the time, pick one up and enjoy the Gossip Girl-esque people watching on the benches outside. But don’t mention that show to any passing private-school girl… nearly all take offense at such a reference.

About Us
We are young (early 20's) and hungry (for knowledge! music! art! food!) friends living on (or in areas which border) Manhattan. We moved to the city seeking higher education, and an alternative to frat parties and gin buckets. We prefer a bottle of Chianti to a keg, lunches at City Bakery to a dining hall, Joe's to Starbucks, Frankie's Amatriciana to Batali's. Our uniting factor is our love for food. For detailed, personal information, keep reading.
