Sur La Table Sale Items and Splurges!

February 5, 2010

My weaknesses tend to aggregate in the realms of food and shopping, rendering certain situations that combine the two to be particularly dangerous: I've been known to spend far too long in ethnic food markets and even the Whole Foods mushroom section can stop me in my tracks.  It is with great self restraint that I inform you about the Sur La Table once-yearly sale.

The sale, which discounts select merchandise 20-40% off, also gives me an opportunity to share the kitchen items I can't live without.  Shopaholicism aside, the following are worth the splurge. CONT'D

Wusthoff 7-piece Knife Set - on sale for $119.95.  Go buy this right now.  Stop reading, put on your coat and boots, and buy it, because it's regularly priced $299.00 and it's worth even more. I spent the first two years of college using a little set of Ikea knives that cost four dollars, but a certain number of destroyed tomatoes later, I sucked it up and invested in a Wusthoff set.  It was easily the best kitchenware decision I've ever made, as these guys make every other knife feel like you are attacking food with a utensil meant for butter.

Cuisinart Smart Stick Stainless Steel Hand Blender & Chopper $49.95

I recently received this as a gift, and have since heartily attacked soups, salsas, milkshakes and the like with gusto.  For those with space-challenged apartments, the idea of soaking up valuable cabinet space with another appliance is overwhelming.  I had foregone a traditional food processor for this reason, but this handy little device is tiny, and can be immersed in a dish, attached to a chopper and comes with a detachable whisk.

Le Creuset Round French Ovens $189.95-$274.95

A Le Creuset piece is a piece you will use for the rest of your life.  My own aunt has faithfully used her set of blue iron-wear for thirty-plus years — an affair we can all aspire to.  I may be romanticizing a cooking pot, but trust me when I say this guy will be one of the most reliable relationships you will ever have.  I look forward to many stews over the course of a lifetime with my white French oven, and hope to one day grow my Le Creuset family.

A Wusthoff knife is a must. If you are going to spend money on something in the kitchen, knives are the way to go! Wondering: what are your favorite methods of sharpening? PC

Le Creusets are the best! Hold flavors amazingly. You are making me want beef stew right now. If you get the French Ovan one color, though, does that mean you have to get all further Le Creuset pieces in the same color?
