After years of listening to my southern and northern California friends argue about which area has real Mexican food, one of them did something to back up all the talk. Along with his brother Leo, our friend Oliver Kremer opened Dos Toros in the tiny space on 4th Avenue which many of us fondly remember as Tasti D-Lite.  Modeled after one of their favorite taquerias in the Bay Area, the brothers hope to "Change New York's Burrito Landscape."  CONT'D

To do this, the boys focused on sourcing fresh, local, high-quality ingredients, and spent hours perfecting their recipes. The result is a menu that's mucho smaller than your local Chipotle. You can choose from burritos, tacos, quesadillas, or a plato with either chicken, pork, or steak.  I went for the chicken burrito, fully loaded with rice, pinto beans, cheese, salsa and sour cream, plus guac (an additional 92 cents).  It was a fantastic package. The beans to sour cream ratio was expert, and the cheese didn't overpower the tender, well-seasoned chicken. The rest of our group enjoyed their food as well, however, a bite of Seth's steak burrito confirmed that chicken was the better choice. The meat was good enough, but didn't have the punch of the Calexico carne asada which also happens to be run by brothers.

Everything about the place is pretty simple, from the food down to the bare-bones decor, which features a bright red wall with a bull logo. The joint is small, and refurbished wooden tables are few, so takeaway might be the best option.  If you do score a seat, beers are dazzlingly cheap: Tecate is just over $2, Corona and Pacifico under $4. Even if I didn't know these guys, I would definitely return.  The food is hella good.

dSWdT8 Informative, but not convincing. Something is missing but what I can not understand. But I will say frankly: bright and benevolent thoughts!...
