For months I've heard about this spot from friends, teachers, strangers, and other people I look up to. I figured the tacos must be nearly amazing since Pinche is located a mere two blocks from reigning taco vendor, La Esquina. I went last week with Madeline and Seth on a beautiful, sunny day when I was feeling happy and excited to sample the heavily gossiped about tacos. We sat inside where the vibe is fun, if a bit kitche, (there were Pinche Taqueria t-shirts hanging on the walls), and the music was occasionally ear deafening. Between the three of us we tried the taco salad with steak, in addition to the chicken, pork, and steak tacos, plus rice and beans...
Our preferred protein was the steak, which was by far the most flavorful of the three. In comparison, the chicken was bland and the pork was merely mediocre. Even though it was the first sunny day in weeks, I was unhappy post-tacos. I left lunch craving something more-- a cappuccino or a cookie-- to substitute for the overall lack of flavor. Sadly, the three of us unanimously agreed that Pinche is way overrated. If you're in the area and in the mood for tacos, walk a few blocks south to La Esquina where you will find a much more satisfying bite.

Sean, Sean, Sean... I promise you this: I will go back to Pinche and sample the fish tacos, and if need be, I will change the review. Actually, I will make an addendum regardless. Maybe we'll even go back together! However, don't you agree that a restaurant should serve good, high quality, tasty food across the board? I know this hurts, but everything we tried at Pinche was just so-so. Maybe if your friend, the owner, boozed us up next time and gave us a generous plate full of fish tacos we'd feel differently. But I'm not so sure. Love, Jena
apparently we've upset some readers... so... what do YOU think of Pinche? Overrated? Amazing?
i love you guys.
TACO SALAD???!!! That's like getting a cheeseburger at Veselka. I don't know what to think of this review. In a city that lacks decent Cali-Mex fare (Taco Chulo in Williamsburg and Taqueria Y Fonda on the UWS being my personal favorites), Pinche has brought the NYC taco/burrito game to the next level. You guys need to revisit...and meet Jeff. When he opened the new location, he gave me a free burrito. Who does that? I'm dissapointed in you guys. Get a fish torta, would ya?
As a(nother) former West Coaster, I too have high standards when it comes to Mexican food. And, as Jesse has pointed out, there is a serious lack of good options in the city. That said, I think Pinche really does a fantastic job on several of the dishes I've tried. (I can't vouch for the taco salad, as I've never ordered that for reasons I hope are obvious.) As such, I take issue with many elements of the review, but none so much as the giant thumbs-down-Not-Worth-It logo sitting atop it. Not Worth It‽ Pinche provides an excellent deal, and is consistently worth every penny I spend there. Pound for pound, flavor for flavor, a plateful of tacos and a delicious horchata from Pinche is one of the best lunchtime deals around. How's that for Worth It. [also, it feels a bit odd to take issue with your music critiques, but I will point out that I heard "El Tonto en la Lluvia" for the first time at Pinche. Look it up, it's awesome.]
Does being a West Coaster make you all superior taco tasters?
@Seth: Yes.
First and foremost, yes. Being a West Coaster does indeed make us superior taco tasters. Sucka. Being west coast bred, a YAH founder, and maternal by nature, I feel it is my responsibility to settle this dispute. As a child, my birthday dinner was spent at El Cholo in Los Angeles-- I smiled gleefully from beneath a giant sombrero as the mariachi band sang "Compleannos Feliz" and my parents sipped their margaritas. As I got older and was granted the priviledge of a driver's license, Howdy's in Malibu became a staple-- a must-have during beach trips. From El Cholo to Howdy's, and all that came between, my palette has been bred to understand the nuances of Mexican food. To be sure, a taco salad is not the ideal menu choice at a mexican restaurant, but for those of us who are West Coasters AND food blog writers (and therefore experts), there is a known art to the taco salad. Does the shell crack easily beneath my fork, or is it too greasy? Alas, it was. Does the ratio of guacamole, beans and sour cream to lettuce create a soupy mess? Indeed, it did. Does the salsa provide adequate heat to counteract the cheese? I'm afraid, my valued readers, it did not. Because of its low priority-level on a mexican food menu, a botched taco salad can be easily forgotten, but unfortunately the tacos we tasted were not good enough to distract. Ultimately, the taco salad rivaled the pork taco, merely because its shell was a convenient container for our trash. But being the dedicated foodies that we are (and because we love Sean), we will return to Pinches and try your beloved fish tacos and perhaps even a torta. And make no mistake my friends, just because food is free, doesn't make it good. I would also like to confirm Jena's statement about the "ear deafening music." Yes, sometimes she is a bit hyperbolic (it's part of her charm), but this is no overstatement. At one point I covered my ears shouting: "WHY? WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?!" It was not the sensory overload we were hoping for when we went to Pinches, but stay tuned for our next report.
finally had the fish tacos there today. yum

About Us
We are young (early 20's) and hungry (for knowledge! music! art! food!) friends living on (or in areas which border) Manhattan. We moved to the city seeking higher education, and an alternative to frat parties and gin buckets. We prefer a bottle of Chianti to a keg, lunches at City Bakery to a dining hall, Joe's to Starbucks, Frankie's Amatriciana to Batali's. Our uniting factor is our love for food. For detailed, personal information, keep reading.

you guys blew it! why would you get the taco salad? the fish tacos are obviously the way to go. once you try them you will promptly access your blog via iPhone and rewrite this review. as a knowledgeable west-coaster with a constant hankering for good mexican food, i think pinche is the closest thing to south-o-da-border bliss in the downtown area that i've had to date. if you're not ready to shell out the $$ for a platter of fish tacos, you gotta taste the glory of the torta (but i also prefer fish between these tasty buns). ALSO, i don't know if you've ever met jeff, the owner, but he is fantastic. the first time i went to piche's original location (on elizabeth st.) he went and bought me and my friend a six pack of coronas from the corner bodega because they didn't have their liquor license yet. how awesome is that? he also swears that the wooden floors are from his abuelita's case en tijuana. be prepared for spring time, because he has promised me that the patio is opening and a mariachi-band fiesta is on the horizon. pinche is the best. you guys are horchata-haters.
