Martha Graham's Clytemnestra "ReMash"

February 18, 2009

In October 2008, the Martha Graham Dance Company performed the world premiere of the 50th Anniversary production of Graham's full-evening ballet Clytemnestra to a sold-out theater in Athens.  The ballet, a masterpiece of 50s modernism, has been reconstructed for 21st century spectators, which means some judicious editing and the addition of super-titles (like at the opera) to remind us of who kills whom, who sleeps with whom, and who manages to survive

the bloody tale.  The performance was such a success that some of the Greek fans followed the company to see them perform in Beijing (yes, I mean China).  Clytemnestra will be in Paris in April, and then return home to the Skirball Center for  ONLY 3 New York performances during the company's week long engagement from May 12-16 -- starring international dance star, Fang yi Sheu as the vengeful Queen Clytemnestra.                                                       While you await Clytemnestra’s return to New York (buy your tickets here ), keep yourself busy with the “Clytemnestra ReMash,” an online video-editing competition.  Participants are challenged to take one of five dance solos on the website and "ReMash" them to compare that character to someone in the news today (think Paris Hilton as Helen of Troy, for example).  This is a great chance to brush up on your ancient Greek history as well as your modern dance history—all with the possibility of a cash prize!  First prize gets $500, and the awards decrease from there.  Check it out.

See you at the Skirball in May!
